CBD Dosage for Dogs

How much CBD oil is right for my dog?

CBD dosage for dogs can be tricky to figure out, and with so much conflicting information on the internet it’s hard to determine what the right dose of CBD is for our furry friends. To solve this problem Essential CBD put together this comprehensive dosage guide based or the peer reviewed veterinary research found at the bottom of this page.

CBD oil dosage for dogs – high level

We recommend using Essential’s CBD dog tinctures and starting at 0.2 mg/pound/day split into two doses, once in the morning and once at night, for the first 7-days. Then, use “stepwise dosing” to increase the dosage over four to six weeks until the desired results are achieved. Return to Essential’s CBD for dogs page.

Accurately measuring CBD is important

Accurately measuring dose volumes for small pets can easily be achieved when using a graduated 1 mL plastic syringe and rounding to the nearest hundredth. Our CBD tinctures for dogs come with an accurate and marked dropper for easily measuring and administering doses. Highly accurate luer slip tip 1 mL syringes can be found on Amazon. To increase measurement accuracy, allow the tincture to warm to room temperature before withdrawing the dose. Daily tincture doses below 0.05 mL should be given to the pet once per day to ensure dose volume measurement accuracy.

Add CBD oil dosage directly to your dog's food for the best results.

We suggest mixing our CBD products with your dog’s food because its easy and it allows your dog to get it’s dose on its own terms, and a full tummy can increase CBD bioavailability! If your pet is doesn’t like its food after CBD oil has been added to it, you can use a plastic syringe to draw the dose amount and squirt it into the back of your pooches’ mouth, between the gums and tongue. Then, lightly hold the bottom of the dog’s jaw and angle its snout slightly upward while softly blowing on the dog’s nose, forcing the dog to swallow and not spit out the tincture.

Macro vs Super Macro dosing

Research on dogs has found that CBD oil tinctures like ours have  greater bioavailability than encapsulated CBD products. Therefore, we recommend starting with a dose of 0.2 mg CBD per pound of body weight per day and slowly working up to a regular maintenance dose of 0.5 mg per pound per day, or a strong maintenance dose of 1.0 mg per pound per day.

Macro-dosing full-spectrum CBD Dog Oil at 9 mg CBD per pound per day was found to be safe, as reported by McGrath, et al., 2018. Some dogs in the 6-week study experienced diarrhea and sedation as the dominant adverse events (AEs) from 4.5 and 9 mg CBD per pound per day. “Full-spectrum” CBD products include THC, a psychoactive cannabinoid, which at low doses and when co-applied with CBD can potentate CBD’s medicinal effects and has many medicinal effects itself currently being studied at US universities.

If your pet is on any prescription medications consult with your veterinarian before giving your pet any CBD. Dose-sensitive medicines that are metabolized in the liver and interact with the P450 enzyme family may be affected through CYP450 deactivation, as they are by grapefruit juice in humans. In such cases, using a low maintenance dose of less than 0.5 mg CBD per pound per day may have a negligible effect on your pet’s drug metabolism.

Super-macro-dosing dogs with CBD Dog Oil at 28 mg per pound in a single dose of 640.5 mg CBD was found to be safe, as reported by Vaughn, Kulpa, and Paulionis, 2020. According to Vaughan, et al.,10 escalating single doses of CBD every three days, starting at 0.9 mg CBD per pound and ending at 28 mg CBD per pound, “led to only mild AEs [adverse events] and no moderate or severe AEs. Importantly, the number and type of AEs that occurred in the CBD oil group were comparable to the corresponding placebo group (MCT oil). In both groups, the majority of AEs were gastrointestinal [diarrhea], which could have been due to discomfort with oral gavage, oil volume, and/or the MCT oil carrier.”

CBD dosage for dogs by condition

For severe chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy and seizures, gastrointestinal issues, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, severe osteoarthritis, neuropsychiatric disorder, liver and kidney disease, and other serious body and brain health issues, 2.0 to 3.0 mg per pound per day may be indicated. Consult your veterinarian. Exceeding the recommended maximum daily dose of 4.5 mg per pound set by veterinarian scientists may be appropriate in some cases; for example, in the case of intractable idiopathic epilepsy when 4.0 to 5.0 mg CBD per pound per day may be indicated.

For neuropathic pain, mild chronic pain, chronic pain and inflammation treated with NSAIDs and/or opioids, infrequent uncomplicated seizures, and frequent seizures well-controlled with anti-convulsant drugs, the regulator to strong CBD maintenance doses (0.5-1.0 mg/pound/day) may be effective.
